Project summary

This private homeowner self-installed 32m² of SpeeTile10 ceiling heating and finished it with plaster.

In what type of home did you install your heating system?
A 1930s house, completely renovated with insulated roof, walls and floors. The home is heated by a ground-source heat pump.

How many people are in your household?
Two adults, two children and a dog.

How did you come across WARP Systems?
I searched for a way to heat the bedrooms with low-temperature heating and didn’t want radiators. After some research I found climate ceilings. WARP’s solution was the most installation-friendly and cost-effective compared with gypsum fibre boards with integrated pipes.

Why did you choose a low-temperature hydronic heating and cooling system?
I want an energy-efficient home. We installed a new roof and a heat pump. Radiators are not ideal for low-temperature operation. I did not want underfloor heating in the bedrooms because of carpet, furniture and the bed. Fan coils were an option but not ideal, so I chose a climate ceiling.

Do you think sustainability is important? Why or why not?
Yes, very important. We only have one planet and must treat it with care. By saving energy we help preserve it.

Do you have specific sustainability goals for the future?
Since the entire house was stripped, we did everything we wanted: insulated exterior walls with stud-in insulation, underfloor heating in the cellar, living room and bathroom, HR++ glazing where possible and a heat-recovery ventilation system for a comfortable indoor climate and efficient heating. If the price ever comes down, we’ll upgrade the lead-light windows to HR glass. Right now the cost is too high.

What convinced you to choose self-installation?
I love a challenge and have done many projects myself. I had help from carpenters to level the ceiling and install OSB boards. I left the plastering to a professional.

How did you experience the installation overall?
I’ve found it easier each time. After the first room I knew the process and it went smoothly. I’m used to 16×2mm underfloor pipes, so 10mm was an adjustment. Working overhead risks kinks in the pipe. Concentration also fades; I learned not to make critical cuts at the end of the day. Once I cut too early and luckily had extra pipe to redo it.

Which aspects were easier than expected?
Mounting the mats took half a day and was much quicker in the second room. Routing the pipes through the ceiling between rooms to the manifold was straightforward.

Which aspects required extra effort?
The manifold is in a cramped attic space, making connections tricky. Working overhead for extended periods was also tiring and made it easy to misjudge the next run.

Did you use the installation tools and instruction videos? If so, how helpful were they?
The Calibration Tool for the pipes is very handy when fitting PushFit connectors. I’m also very satisfied with PushFit because it doesn’t reduce flow compared with Eurocone fittings. I reviewed the supplied instructions but learned most by doing the work.
