Project summary

This project was self-installed by a private customer. A total of 39 m² of SpeeTherm15 was laid. On top of the underfloor heating system, Heat-Foil was installed in combination with laminate. Below you can read this customer’s experience:

In what type of home did you install your heating system?
A small detached house from 1939.

How many people are in your household?
Five: two adults and three young children.

How did you come across WARP Systems?
I searched online for heating solutions suitable for wooden floors that wouldn’t be too tall or thick.

Why did you choose a low-temperature hydronic heating and cooling system?
We opted for low-temperature heating to prepare for a future switch to a heat pump. Right now we still have a gas connection and a boiler. When the boiler needs replacing, we hope to go completely gas-free, though space for a hot-water cylinder is limited, which may pose a challenge. We’re hopeful that, just like WARP Systems, innovators will create solutions for existing homes so we can finally cut the gas.

Do you think sustainability is important? Why or why not?
We consider sustainability very important. When we bought the house it already had double glazing and retro-insulated cavity walls. Since 2012 we’ve installed solar panels and added insulation to the ceilings and roof. The floor was poorly insulated and suffered woodworm, so that was our primary reason for tackling the ground-floor renovation. We’ve also added more panels to the outbuilding. Our goal is to make our 1930s home energy-neutral. By combining floor insulation with low-temperature heating, we’re making a big step forward. Good for our home and for the planet, which we want to pass on in good condition to our children.

Do you have specific sustainability goals for the future?
We aim to remove our gas connection, and in terms of heating we’re already set. Beyond the low-temperature underfloor heating, we use an air-to-air heat pump elsewhere in the house for heating and cooling.

What convinced you to choose self-installation?
I handle all home projects myself. Installing solar panels, making structural changes, insulating and renovating, so the option to self-install was the deciding factor in choosing WARP.

How did you experience the installation overall?
The system was extremely easy to install. The well-designed layout plan helped me think through how to place the preformed panels on the floor. Then I laid the AluTherm heat-conducting profiles according to the plan. My son helped me roll out the SpeeTube, one person unrolling the pipe, the other pressing it into the profiles. It was a fun, clean project. The only downside was how quickly it was finished!

Which aspects were easier than expected?
Laying the panels, profiles and pipe went extremely smoothly. I thought the layout plan wouldn’t match the existing situation perfectly, but I only had to make two adjustments. The rest fit exactly as planned.

Which aspects required extra effort?
Especially at the manifold, at the transitions to another room, and at the end of the room where extra channels had to be cut to route the pipe. The WARP team had already advised ordering an EPS torch. I never regretted following that advice. Even that tricky task was done in no time with the EPS torch. Using an AluTherm heat-conducting profile as a guide was also a perfect tip.

Did you use the installation tools and instruction videos? If so, how helpful were they?
I definitely used the videos and also relied on the expert advice from the sales team. I also used the recommended EPS torch and the pipe cutter. For both of those tools, there’s really no question. You must order them.
